Student Counseling
The San Juan College Student Counseling provides free, solution-focused personal counseling for currently enrolled students at SJC. Students include all persons who are registered in a San Juan College credit class. Adult Basic Education, General Education Degree students are included in this definition.
Counseling Services provides the following:
- Crisis intervention
- Counseling for such matters as: anxiety, depression, trauma, sexual assault, domestic violence, loneliness, relationship concerns, grief and loss, family stress, sexual orientation, homesickness, college-related transition, and personal growth and development
- Teaching skills development for academic success, such as test anxiety, stress management, time management, coping skills and self-esteem.
- Assessment and referral to other campus and community resources
- Mental health consultation, education, and outreach programs for students, faculty, and staff.
It is recommended that students make appointments for all counseling sessions in order to confirm that a counselor will be available to them. Crisis situations will be handled as quickly as possible by a counselor.
There are several ways to schedule an appointment
- The most convenient method for many students is to call Student Counseling directly at (505) 566-4255
- Students can stop by the Cultural Center (Student Health Center) as well as the Student Counseling in-person to schedule an appointment. The Student Counseling Center is located in the Health Science Center, room 3409.
- Login to MySJC and click the Student Health Portal under Quick Links in the top menu to schedule your appointment today!
Students may send Student Counseling an email request from their San Juan College email accounts to: counseling4mentalhealth@253000xa.com.

We appreciate prompt arrival for appointments. Please notify us at (505) 566-4255 if you will be late.
If a student has a scheduled appointment with a counselor and needs to reschedule the appointment, please call or email Student Counseling with 24 hour advance at (505) 566-4255 or counseling4mentalhealth@253000xa.com. This allows us to use the time for others. Please know that we work hard to accommodate the needs of all students on campus and that each appointment is important. Your communication and patience is greatly appreciated.
Walk-In Hours
This is available twice a week and no appointment is needed! Utilize this service on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
UWill - FREE Virtual Counseling Services
As a San Juan College student, you have FREE access to therapists (virtually) + on-demand crisis counseling. Register at app.uwill.com to speak to a therapist today! SJC Students can also access the FREE therapy through MySJC by clicking on the UWill Virtual Counseling button under popular links on the MySJC students page. UWill is in addition to the in-person counseling available at San Juan College and can be utilized by SJC online students or those who need services after working hours.
The Jed Foundation Mental Health Screening - FREE online resource center
The Jed Foundation Mental Health Screening is a comprehensive, confidential, online resource center where students can feel comfortable searching for the information they need regarding mental and emotional health. Take a look around and explore what The Jed Foundation has to offer!
All interactions with counseling services are confidential. This includes scheduling, attendance, content of sessions, progress in counseling, and your counseling records. No record of counseling is contained in any academic, educational, or job placement file. At students’ discretion, they may request that a counselor release specific information about their counseling sessions to designated entities. This must be done in writing on a Release of Information form.
Exceptions to Confidentiality
- For medical emergencies.
- If there is evidence of clear and imminent danger of harm to self and/or others – a counselor is legally required to report this information to the authorities responsible for ensuring public safety.
- New Mexico state law requires that anyone who learns of or strongly suspects physical or sexual abuse, or neglect of any person under 18 years of age or of an elder adult, must report this information to appropriate authorities.
- A court order issued by a judge may require a counselor to release information contained in records and/or require a counselor to testify in a court hearing.
- Counselors may consult with other counselors to provide the best possible care. These consultations are for quality assurance of services and professional purposes only.
- Your counselor may consult with the Health Clinic Director/Nurse Practitioner to provide the best possible care. These consultations are for professional purposes only.
There are multiple reasons for referring clients to community-based therapists. The following reasons are the most common:
- Multiple issues that will likely require extensive therapy
- Current drug and/or alcohol use
- Substance abuse treatment is needed
- Eating disorders treatment is needed
- Inpatient psychiatric treatment is required
- Case management
- Medication management
- Student will be finishing degree or certificate program and be leaving SJC before a reasonable course of treatment can be provided at SJC
- Student stops actively attending classes at SJC
- Couples counseling is required
Clients are obligated to make their own payment arrangements with community-based therapists.
